Summer can leave your skin dealing with more than unwanted hair. Heat, sweat, shaving, sunscreen, friction, and sun exposure can contribute to dryness, irritation, ingrown hairs, and uneven-looking skin.
As fall approaches, it’s the perfect time for a skin reset.
At Belle’s Wax Studio in Madison, WI, we offer professional waxing, sugaring, and customized facials. While both waxing and sugaring provide longer-lasting results than shaving, after years of performing both services, we’ve developed a clear preference:
When clients ask us which hair-removal method we believe is better for the skin and for long-term results, we recommend sugaring.
Here’s why.
Choosing Your End-of-Summer Skin Care

Deciding between waxing, sugaring, and custom facials can transform your post-summer skincare routine. Each method serves a purpose for your skin.
Waxing vs. Sugaring: Which Is Better?
Waxing is still the hair-removal method most people recognize. That’s why many first-time clients initially book a Brazilian wax rather than Brazilian sugaring.
And professional waxing works. It removes hair from the root and can leave the skin smooth for weeks.
But waxing isn’t your only option—and at Belle’s Wax Studio, it isn’t necessarily the option we recommend first.
Sugaring can remove the same thick, coarse, and stubborn hair people traditionally associate with waxing, while using a very different extraction technique.
Our experience performing both services has made sugaring our preferred method.
Yes, Sugaring Can Remove Thick, Coarse Hair
One misconception about sugaring is that it’s primarily for fine hair or sensitive skin.
We disagree.
At Belle’s Wax Studio, we specialize in removing the “tough” hair that people often assume requires wax.
Technique matters.
During a sugaring service, the sugar paste is molded against the direction of hair growth. We may mold the paste over an area multiple times before extraction, allowing the sugar to surround and grip the hair.
The hair is then extracted in the natural direction of growth rather than being pulled backward against the way it grows.
For an experienced sugarist, coarse Brazilian hair isn’t a reason to choose waxing over sugaring.
Why We Believe Sugaring Is Gentler on the Skin
One of the biggest differences between waxing and sugaring happens before the hair is even removed: heat.
Wax must be heated to be applied properly.
Sugaring doesn’t require hot wax on the skin. Professional sugar paste is used at a much lower temperature.
For clients whose skin is already sensitive, reactive, or prone to post-hair-removal irritation, we believe eliminating unnecessary heat is an important advantage.
Sugaring also removes the hair in its natural direction of growth. In our professional experience, this combination can mean a noticeably different experience for the skin.
And our clients notice it.
What Happens When Our Waxing Clients Try Sugaring?
This is one of the reasons we’re so confident recommending sugaring.
Belle’s offers both waxing and sugaring.
We aren’t telling clients that they have to sugar. If you love waxing and your skin responds beautifully to it, we’re happy to wax you.
But we’ve seen a pattern over the years.
Many new clients come to us asking for waxing simply because waxing is what they know. Eventually, they try sugaring.
And many don’t go back.
Clients frequently tell us they notice a significant difference in how their skin looks and feels after sugaring. They may also begin noticing differences in their hair as they continue scheduling consistent appointments.
Does Sugaring Reduce Hair Growth Over Time?
This is where our years of hands-on experience have been particularly interesting.
We can’t promise that every client’s hair will respond the same way. Hair growth is affected by many individual factors.
But we can tell you what we consistently observe in our treatment room.
Clients who maintain regular sugaring appointments over an extended period often tell us—and show us—that their hair growth changes.
After approximately a year of consistent sugaring, some clients have noticeably less hair returning. Regrowth may appear less dense, and in some areas, certain hairs may stop returning altogether.
We’ve seen this repeatedly enough that we consider it one of the long-term benefits worth discussing with clients.
It’s also one reason we don’t look at sugaring as simply another way to get smooth for a few weeks.
Consistency matters.
Our Sugar Paste Makes a Difference, Too
Not all professional sugar paste performs exactly the same.
At Belle’s Wax Studio, we make our own organic sugar paste.
That didn’t happen by accident.
After working with and trying many professional sugar pastes, we wanted a paste that performed the way we believed professional sugaring should perform—especially when working with coarse and stubborn hair.
We’ve tested other professional pastes alongside our own, and our experience continues to reinforce our preference for the formulation and performance of Belle’s sugar.
Combined with proper technique, it allows us to tackle everything from finer body hair to the coarse, deeply rooted hair commonly found in the Brazilian area.
Sugaring Isn’t New—It’s the Original
Sugaring may feel like the “new” alternative to waxing in the United States, but the concept is anything but new.
Sugar-based hair removal has roots stretching back centuries and is associated with ancient Middle Eastern and North African beauty traditions.
In other words, waxing may be more familiar to today’s American client, but sugar-based hair removal has a remarkably long history.
There’s a reason variations of this technique have survived across cultures and generations.
So, Should You Get a Brazilian Wax or Brazilian Sugaring?
If you’ve always waxed and love your results, you don’t have to stop.
Belle’s Wax Studio offers both.
But if you ask us which one we recommend trying?
Sugaring.
Especially if you:
-
Experience irritation after waxing or shaving
-
Have sensitive skin
-
Struggle with coarse or stubborn Brazilian hair
-
Are prone to ingrown hairs
-
Want to eliminate heated wax from your hair-removal routine
-
Want to see how your hair responds to consistent sugaring over time
You may be surprised by the difference.
Many of our regular sugaring clients started exactly where you are: booking the waxing service they already knew.
Then they tried sugar.
What About an End-of-Summer Facial?
Hair removal may not be the only reset your skin needs after summer.
Sun exposure, heat, sweat, sunscreen, and environmental buildup can leave facial skin feeling dehydrated, congested, sensitive, or dull.
A custom facial at Belle’s Wax Studio allows us to tailor the treatment to what your skin needs at the time of your appointment.
Depending on your skin, your customized facial may focus on:
-
Hydration
-
Dryness
-
Sensitivity and redness
-
Acne and congestion
-
Hyperpigmentation
-
Dull or uneven-looking skin
-
Signs of aging
Instead of giving every client the same facial, we customize the service around your skin.
Your End-of-Summer Skin Reset
If unwanted hair is your primary concern, consider making this the season you finally try professional sugaring.
If you already sugar, stay consistent. The changes we’ve observed in long-term clients don’t happen after one or two appointments.
And if summer has left your face feeling dry, congested, or dull, a customized facial may be the reset your skin needs before fall.
At Belle’s Wax Studio in Madison, Wisconsin, we’re not interested in simply removing hair as quickly as possible. We want to help you find the hair-removal method and skin-care routine that gives you the best experience and results over time.
We offer waxing.
But there’s a reason so many of our waxing clients eventually become sugaring clients.
Come experience the difference for yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is sugaring better than waxing?
At Belle’s Wax Studio, we prefer sugaring based on our years of professional experience performing hair removal. Both methods effectively remove hair from the root, but we particularly like sugaring’s low-temperature application and its technique of extracting hair in the natural direction of growth.
Can sugaring remove coarse Brazilian hair?
Absolutely. Experienced technique is important, but we regularly use sugaring to remove thick, coarse, and stubborn Brazilian hair at Belle’s Wax Studio.
Is sugaring only for sensitive skin?
No. Sensitive skin is one reason someone may choose sugaring, but we recommend it for many different skin and hair types. It’s a highly effective hair-removal method—not simply a “gentler alternative” to waxing.
Does sugaring make hair stop growing?
Individual results vary, so we don’t promise permanent hair removal from routine sugaring. However, in our professional experience, clients who sugar consistently over extended periods often experience noticeable changes in regrowth. Some long-term clients have areas where certain hairs appear to stop returning.
How often should I get sugared?
Many clients maintain their results by scheduling appointments approximately every 3–6 weeks. Staying consistent also gives you and your esthetician an opportunity to observe how your hair growth changes over time.
I’ve always waxed. Should I try sugaring?
We think it’s worth experiencing for yourself. Many Belle’s clients initially book waxing because it’s the method they’re familiar with, then convert to sugaring after experiencing the difference in their skin and results.
Can I still get waxed at Belle’s Wax Studio?
Of course. We offer both professional waxing and sugaring. Our role is to educate you about your options and let you choose the method you prefer.
